‘Scopa’ commissioned by the European Sax Ensemble

A choreography and musical composition for the twelve person European Sax Ensemble.
How can the body of a saxophone be used as a compositional tool?
How do we imagine the relationship between our physical orientation and instruments? How can the feeling of breath on my neck be an input for a musical conversation?

The European Sax Ensemble. under the direction of Stéphane Guillaume commissioned me to invent a new work in 2013 for a European tour. I wanted to work with the poetics of touch and the imagination of the saxophone. In this work. I was less interested in one touch equals one sound, but rather that touch becomes a foundation for a complex dialogue. The participants can disagree, resist, suggest and interpret in relation to their imaginary world of their instrument.
